Heat Stroke Dangers!

I wanted to take some time today to STRESS to everyone the dangers of heat stroke! Sadly yesterday I heard that a little Pug I had rehomed in April of 2009 passed away from heat stroke on Wednesday.

Please, please, please be aware of the dangers of heat! His owner thought he was okay in their home with a fan....obviously that was not the case. I realize it could happen to anyone, but with this flat faced breed it is even more dangerous. Do your best to take care of your little ones...this goes for children too! Don't EVER leave a pet or a child in a car....EVER. If you don't have air-conditioning in your home, be creative. Fans, cooling mats, cooling collars. Do all you can do! The same goes for trips in your car. I had a blog friend whose Pug died after riding home from a visit in their van on a hot day. She was in the back and got overheated and did not survive. Don't assume because you can feel the cold air blasting you in the front seat that it is the same in the back of the vehicle. I have actually gotten into the back area where my group rides to see how cool it was. I always cool the interior of my car down prior to a trip with the gang.

You can read more about heat stroke HERE and HERE

Take care and stay safe this Summer!

Thanks for this reminder, Punchy!
So sorry to hear about the pug you rehomed. :(
It is so important to keep our puggies out of the heat.
Hope you have a great weekend!

That is so sad! I let our boys out to roam for a little bit and when they get to the back door they want in.....I always tell the kids-if they are wanting in then you let them in. We have air conditioning and use our ceiling fans a lot too. Our pugs stay in the kitchen on the cool floor.

I think some people don't realize how hot these little guys really get. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks this is important information. We are sad to hear about the little pugger. Here in Va I am so worried about mine overheating. The cooling mats really work great at home for card rides.

That is so sad. Heat stroke can happen so fast. It can happen anywhere, but with the hot weather here in FL I am always very concerned. I was just talking to my vet about this the other day. He said the best way to cool a dog down is a cold water bath on the paws, ears & face (areas where the blood vessels are close to the surface).

I have even noticed a difference between morning walks and evening walks. The pugs do much better in the morning because the sidewalk hasn't had the sun beating down on it all day and is a touch cooler. Little things sometimes make a big difference.

Hi Punchy! I tell Mom to put the ac on when the temps get over 80. I get overheated really easy and I can't handle the hot weather.

Thanks for reminding everyone that us puggies are very delicate and that we need extra care in the summertime!

This is such a great reminder for all of us, Punchy! I am linking to it on my bloggie, hope you don't mind. :)

Punchy,
I am the mom of Kitty and Coco. We recently went to an event and it was HOT. I would let the girls walk a lap around the place, and then rest in the shade plus give them cool water every rest. Is it still possible for them to get overheated in situations like that? Please help a concerned mom figure this out. Thanks.

This is so true. As you know, I'm in Florida and it's even harder! Last year when we were looking for a bigger vehicle and told Rob there was only ONE major stipulation...it had to have air vents in the cargo area so I could cool the pugs down easily!

Bless Your Heart Punchy!!
~Thank You For Taking The Time To Do This Post~

As the weather warms up to hooman liking the Pugga's not so much! (or other smush faces)

Whenever we have to go somewhere even in hi 60's the sunbeams in the car and we are forever freezing ourselves with turning on the air to cool off the puggies.

I am so grateful to Milwaukee PugFest for doing the Fest indoors. The first fest in '06 was outdoors and it was hot! It's so taxing on them!

Rob and I are thankful for our central air conditioning. We live in an old house and that was definitely a prerequisite upon moving in.
We have a three bedroom home and had to switch Anakin and Izzy's room around because one of the rooms just was too hot. Then we just realized the upstairs rooms are too hot for them. (even with the air) All they do is pant.
So the airfloor in the hallway is nice so the sleeping quarters are set up there in the Pug wing of the upstairs. (hee hee) Josies is on the couch. (she freaks out being up stairs period)

If I'm out and see a dog in a car I will go to that store the car is in front of and tell them.
My mom and I were eating at a resturant and they guy left his lab in his truck with the window cracked but it was so hot that day.
We though (jerk) maybe he was going to do take-out. The guy sat in the resturant and started eating. Oh boy...my mom went right up to him and did everything but throw his food at him. He told her he loved his dog, but his dog was hot!!
He took his food and left!
Maybe that was harsh, maybe not...but would you leave a child in a car while you sat down and ate a meal!! Hot or not!!
Great Post!!!!

This is a great reminder. We had a hot summer in Australia - temperatures in excess of 40 degrees so we are now enjoying the cooler weather. When Mum went out she always left me a big bath tub full of water. I love to swim so it kept me safe and cool over the summer.

I truly wish I knew more about Pugs prior to this past Friday (8/30). My beloved pug Abigail-Pugsy died from heat stroke while I was out that day. I can only imagine what she went through and what her little mind must have thought as she slowly passed.
I remain grief stricken and blame myself for not knowing any better on what owning a Pug required from me.

Still Grieving and missing my smart, happy, loveable pugsy
