Up and down.....

The village I work in has the Erie Canal pass through it. When taller boats, or boats with masts need to go by the bridge raises. On this particular morning I was the first car. My office isn't far across the other side, but unless you realize the bridge is going to go up about a half mile before, there is no place to turn to avoid it....you just wait.

I've never seen where the whole bridge raises, just draw bridges where the bridge splits and raises on each side. Interesting!
Bridges freak me out for some reason.

how long do you have to wait? what is that set of stairs/platform on the left at the canal...where you get on to cruise ships that pass thru, lol???

I live in a big city where we have roads that open up like that when tall ships and tall sailboats go out in the spring or come in for the winter. I had a Saturday class that ended at noon and I would get caught by the raised bridge almost every other week on my way home. Good to know I'm not alone!

That is neat! I have only seen the other kind too, although we have a few swing bridges, where it swings out instead of up.

i have seen bridges in s. florida when i was little visiting my grandma. i remember thinking how neat and kid of scary it was, especially if you were on the side walk part!

ahhh to be a kid again. i never thought then about being late or made to wait. :)

what a great memory and reminder.

thanks punchy!

Awesome! I remember singing a song about the Erie canal when I was a kid in choir.
